Oil resumption: Ogoni host community youths laments exclusion

The Ogoni Oil and Gas Host  Communities Youth Association  is drawing the attention of the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Office of the  National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu to the ongoing discussions surrounding the proposed resumption of oil activities in Ogoniland.

It is on record that during engagements with key stakeholders, assurance were given by the federal government that the process towards oil resumption would be anchored on an inclusive dialogue, ensuring that all critical stakeholders including women and youths association are adequately represented.

However, it has become increasingly concerning that the Ogoni Oil and Gas Host Communities Youths Association, which serves as the umbrella body representing youths across the oil and gas host communities in Ogoniland, has not been formally engaged or carried along in the ongoing dialogue process.

Given the strategic importance of youth participation in fostering peace, stability, and sustainable development within host communities, it is appropriate that this association be recognized as a key stakeholder and among the foremost groups consulted in discussions concerning the future of oil operations in Ogoniland.

The Ogoni Oil and Gas Host Community Youth Association requests  that the federal government and the National Security Adviser should take immediate and decisive action to ensure that the promised inclusive dialogue process is fully implemented in both principle and practice.

Failure to correct this pattern of exclusion may leave the affected youth bodies with no alternative but to peacefully mobilize and exercise their constitutional right to public demonstration in order to demand proper representation and inclusion in decisions that directly affect their communities and their future.

The Ogoni Oil and Gas Host Communities Youth Association remain committed to peace, constructive engagement, and the sustainable development of our communities. However, our voices must not be ignored in matters that directly concern our land, environment, and economic future.

We trust that the Federal Government will act swiftlyh to uphold its promise of fairness, transparency, and inclusivity in important national matter.
