Former President of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People, Legborsi Pyagbara, has asserted that Oyigbo Local Government Area belongs historically to the Ogoni people.
Speaking on the issue, Mr. Pyagbara maintained that the current inhabitants of Oyigbo are migrants who crossed from a neighbouring state across the Imo River, and therefore, cannot claim ownership of the land.
He further explained that the creation of Oyigbo Local Government Area does not in any way strip the Ogoni people of their ancestral rights to the area.
Mr. Pyagbara also recounted a historical incident in 1994, when fourteen communities around Ban-goi were reportedly displaced during a military operation, which he described as a deliberate attempt by some Igbo elements, allegedly led by Major Obi and Paul Okontimu, to extend Igbo influence into Ogoniland.
He concluded by calling for historical justice and recognition of Ogoni territorial rights within Rivers State.
